Mobile devices truly are permeating every area of the working world. Now, the federal government has jumped on the bandwagon and started advocating the use of mobile devices – laptops, tablets and smart phones — among its employees. Of course, government agencies face the same data security issues as health care and other organizations. There are regular business owners who balk at the idea of allowing their employees to use their own portable devices for work because of the potential for client lists and other important company data to be lost or stolen. But people demand mobility, and in some cases, it’s necessary.
Productivity is as important to the federal government as it is to any other organization. According to a survey conducted by MeriTalk, federal mobile tablet use is expected to nearly triple by 2013. In addition, federal IT professionals say that a mobile workforce is more productive, and if the government refused to allow employees to use mobile devices, that would hinder its ability to attract the best candidates to apply for federal jobs.
“Between the tablet revolution and telework mandates, the federal government is quickly becoming mobile,” said Craig P. Abod, president, Carahsoft, which underwrote the survey with VMware, in a MeriTalk press release. “To support the mobile workforce, agencies need to manage a growing number of devices and offer solutions that enhance productivity without sacrificing security.”
Of the 152 federal CIOs and IT professionals who were surveyed in December 2011, 75% said that their agencies used encryption, 47% use multi-factor identification and 46% use backup and restore to secure important data.
Government agencies, like health care organizations, are responsible for highly sensitive information. But it seems as if government IT professionals are better prepared to overcome the security challenges involved with managing myriad mobile devices. Still, is it really wise to let government employees use their personal devices for work?
